The Dutch Burgher Union News letter - August 2005 President's Message Dear Fellow member, Bingo in Chinatown was a great success – and a good start to our future plans for entertainment. Red being the predominant colour, red lanterns were strung from the ceiling and members dressed in varied red outfits. Members and their guests put on their thinking caps to answer and decipher the Chinese letters on the walls - for a clever and unique quiz which was won by Ms Michelle de Kretser's son, Orlando. They also relished the spicy Chinese repast, as well as many exciting games of Bingo. Many thanks to Dorian and his team for giving us a wonderful evening. I would like an atmosphere of pleasant camaraderie and unity to prevail in the DBU - which belongs to us all - Unity is strength which will spur us all to achievement in every imaginable sphere. I will appreciate your suggestions and ideas for the progress of the DBU and the comfort and well being of our members which is a priority. Let us go forth hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, to make this an enjoyable and memorable year! See you at Moonlight and Roses on the 18th August. Yours sincerely, Preservation of high moral standards Joseph R Grenier Esq., King's Counsel, a stalwart of The Dutch Burgher Union posed a question way back in 1915, just 6 years alter the formation of the DBU. The question was, whether the Burgher Community, then in Ceylon, measured up to and preserved the traditions and high moral standards of their ancestors, based on the truly noble and moral principles of their private and public life. He observed that while he saw with his mind's eye the many who had, with indomitable perseverance and energy maintained the integrity of their character in the face of serious and antagonistic influences he also saw with great disappointment, a tendency among some, thankfully in the minority, holding views and opinions different to those held by the founding fathers of the DBU, and restlessness of dissatisfaction, and that if this unfortunate trend was allowed to continue, encouraged by those who should know better, it would be a sad day for the Union.
