DBU building restoration progress
Presently, sections of the building such as the hall and in particular, the upstair bar area have undergone eye-catching restorations such as the rich wood panel ceilings and exposed beams in both areas. The ceiling upstairs in the members lounge and bar area has simply been restored to its original position i.e. directly under the roof. This has not only increased its height considerably and contributes greatly to negating the effects of Colombo’s stifling heat, but has also exposed magnificent moulded teak beams as well as two beautiful Aureole windows on either side. Other additions are elegant twin wooden bladed antique fans which complement the old-world feel and look. A look in fact identical to that which our forefathers had back in 1913 when the building was constructed. This work to the hall and upstair section was preceded by the rear verandah section being virtually re-constructed. The verandah’s size and height was greatly increased with wood panel ceilings and tall round brick and plaster “Dutch style” pillars replacing a low asbestos roof and short cement pillars. Dutch style “goluwa” lamps replaced strip lighting and a “round” tile roof completed the picture. The new verandah was designed, built and donated by a member. The success of this led to further restoration and improvements being identified and carried out in other areas of the building. None of this would have been possible of course without the generosity of donors and our grateful thanks go out to all of them and in particular, the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Sri Lanka who has been exceptionally supportive. To enable us to continue this work however, we still need all the support we can get and we would gladly welcome and appreciate the support of well-wishers and donors in helping us to resurrect the Dutch Burgher Union building to the finest it can be. We are currently working out the mechanics of a proposal on how members can support this endeavour if they wish to do so and will provide details on our website shortly.
